I remembered Shez’s last name is Meriam, as well as the title “The Daughter of Meriam” here – is that just in reference to her mother having the same last name, or did she change her last name to her mother’s first name as a way of moving away patriarchal naming conventions? If the latter, that makes her all the more iconic (but that’s just a guess on my part) 😍

Shez’s name Shanzey binti Meriam follows the naming convention of Muslim Malay people.
Instead of a surname/family name you inherent your father’s first name. The binti here is a prefix meaning “daughter of” (bin, aka “son of” is the male equivalent).
So all together: First-Name daughter/son of Father’s Name.
For reasons you will soon learn in this chapter, Shez was instead given her mother’s first name, Meriam.
Translated: Shanzey daughter of Meriam, hence the name of the chapter 😎

Ah so I’m on mobile so I can’t reply to comments, but @ Rusty’s reply to the comment above, I never knew Muslim Malay people follow such a similar naming convention as Iceland! The Icelandic naming convention is your father’s name + dóttir or son, so if an Icelandic person has a father named Jón then their last name would be Jónsdóttir or Jónsson.
Although matronymic names have been gaining popularity over the past few decades or just naming kids after both parents, so for example if a couple named Helga and Jón had a daughter and wanted to be a little more progressive they might have their daughter the last name Helgudóttir Jónsdóttir.
However unfortunately all too often if women dare give their children a matronymic last name while the father is still in the picture they get heckled for “destroying Icelandic tradition and culture.”
Like my friend gave her children matronymic last names even though she’s still happily married to the father of her children, so now both her family and her husband’s family are always giving her shit for “trampling on Icelandic culture and tradition” for not giving them just a patronymic last name 🙄

Some open compromise in language can be helpful as well, like if you can’t bear to use “AFAB” or “DFAB”, use natal female or natal female people (even if you believe that its
unnecessary or that just ‘female’ should be enough, or that it sounds stupid and redundant if you believe one can’t change sex), if you can’t bear to use transgender men nor enby, avoid TIF or “nonbinary girls” and use something else.
If you are discussing individual trans people, find ways to talk without pronoun emphasis rather than jumping to call somebody of MTF spectrum He, and somebody of FTM spectrum She, if for whatever reason(s) you refuse to stick to the “preferred pronoun always no buts no ifs” mindset.
And if you feel the conversation is getting heated, its okay to ask for a pause timeout so you both calm down and can think better your arguments. Supposedly that way you can reduce chances of the other person going into defensive mode, and you can discuss the nuances of your (dis/)agreements with more tact and nuance and less mutual reactive condescencion.
It’s not a guarantee that you’ll be compatible and end up together, but i hope that’s better than nothing. Maybe somebody else here can chime in with better insight if they have been through experiences like yours.
