Chapter 12: The Daughter of Meriam

In preparation for her first shift back at work, Jaden takes Shez up on her offer for a 1:1 self-defence refresher.
Along with a boost in confidence, and finally being able to put theย  events of that one awful night to rest, Jaden learns that she and Shez are much more alike than she once thought.

It's finally time, ladies >:3c Thank you for your patience, and buckle up!!!
The first iterations of this chapter have been in the works since late 2019, I am literally off the walls excited I may explode!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Hello again! I’m glad to hear you’ve been able to enjoy both ๐Ÿฅฐ I think any new readers that come on board now get to enjoy the best of both worlds.

The dynamic of our main trio is well established, so it gives more to read out of the weekly page updates (imo!)

Thank you so much for the kind comment ๐Ÿฅฐ

I remembered Shez’s last name is Meriam, as well as the title “The Daughter of Meriam” here – is that just in reference to her mother having the same last name, or did she change her last name to her mother’s first name as a way of moving away patriarchal naming conventions? If the latter, that makes her all the more iconic (but that’s just a guess on my part) ๐Ÿ˜

    1. A very good guess!
Shez’s name Shanzey binti Meriam follows the naming convention of Muslim Malay people.

Instead of a surname/family name you inherent your father’s first name. The binti here is a prefix meaning “daughter of” (bin, aka “son of” is the male equivalent).

So all together: First-Name daughter/son of Father’s Name.

For reasons you will soon learn in this chapter, Shez was instead given her mother’s first name, Meriam.

Translated: Shanzey daughter of Meriam, hence the name of the chapter ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  18. Ah so I’m on mobile so I can’t reply to comments, but @ Rusty’s reply to the comment above, I never knew Muslim Malay people follow such a similar naming convention as Iceland! The Icelandic naming convention is your father’s name + dรณttir or son, so if an Icelandic person has a father named Jรณn then their last name would be Jรณnsdรณttir or Jรณnsson.

Although matronymic names have been gaining popularity over the past few decades or just naming kids after both parents, so for example if a couple named Helga and Jรณn had a daughter and wanted to be a little more progressive they might have their daughter the last name Helgudรณttir Jรณnsdรณttir.

However unfortunately all too often if women dare give their children a matronymic last name while the father is still in the picture they get heckled for “destroying Icelandic tradition and culture.”

Like my friend gave her children matronymic last names even though she’s still happily married to the father of her children, so now both her family and her husband’s family are always giving her shit for “trampling on Icelandic culture and tradition” for not giving them just a patronymic last name ๐Ÿ™„

    1. Wow that’s very interesting to know, thank you for sharing!

How very telling that the misogyny also carries over tho :/ Cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen men claim it’s no big deal to take his name in one breath, while claiming to feel degraded and disrespected at the idea of taking a woman’s name in the next.

Tradition is one of my least favourite excuses for misogyny ://

Thank you so much!! I sure hope so ๐Ÿฅบ I think I talked about this on this website before but my relationship status as of right now is:

Me: I have a such a crush on this girl.. and she’s bisexual I think she likes me back!!… too bad she’s a TRA ๐Ÿ˜”
My friend: Makayla no!! Think with your head not your vagina!!

        My friend: NOOOOO!!!

        Sooooo yeah ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

        1. You’re welcome!!! ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค— I’m a big Shez fan, so I can understand why Parn chose her too, it’s… I mean look at her, it’s too much power.

Like, I think actually Shez killed Yamcha with mere eye contact that one time, but it was offscreen and Toriyama got insecure about how to handle her presence so the producers edited her out not just from the EP but the whole show in retaliation (misogyny never sleeps)…

I find solace in the fact I dont think I could be even Shez’s neighbour, i’d be far too annoying of a fan, i think i just couldn’t be normal about her short or longterm ๐Ÿ’€ So yeah, good to know someone like Parn can handle that much Ki and magnificence just right and weave things in a healthy manner.

OK extreme silliness aside, ohhh somebody’s got a cruuuushhhhh, cuteeeeee… um wait, TRA is something like Trans Rights Activist no? In which case, that sounds rough ๐Ÿค• You sound kinda like you’re the Clancy to her MJ situation. Or the Riley to her Blaire.

I’m not sure what to tell you cause i feel i’m in some wobbly gray area when it comes to gender related discourse or the trans rights stuff. Not full on insulated unaware normie like Jaden but close to that. I havent been in the situation you describe either.

Hmmmm ๐Ÿค”I think if you still want to take the risk and proceed, consider if she is actually single first cuz, she could be bi and into you but not looking, OR bi and not into you and also not looking for partners rn, so regardless of views it wouldnt work ๐Ÿ˜….

The other thing to consider is how much potential disagreement actually IS there between you two, cause you guess and say she’s a “TRA” but seems it’s not wholy100% confirmed, right? so its unknown where you two actually agree or have commonality in views and where you don’t and stray toward opposite poles.

Is the Activist part even true or does she just hold certain views with little to not Action involved?? Does she truly hold said views to heart and can understand why she does or is she preemptively parroting and scared of backlash?? What does “Supporting trans rights” mean to you vs her, as in what does “Trans Rights” mean or involve in detail, where’s the cutoff? There is variation in the field you’re stepping.

I’m not a big risktaker so its not likely i’d make a move if i were in similar shoes, but then again i’m not You and this is about You! so… If you want to find out, a tip i’ve gotten from people who have dealt with spiritual incompatibility in partners is to actively avoid using inflamatory or loaded labels whenever discussing things.

With religion its certain words like heathen and schizo. So in your case i suppose it would translate into preparing for discussing stuff without using the words TERF, TWERF, TRA, tranny, troons, gendie, deluded, handmaiden and similar.

Some open compromise in language can be helpful as well, like if you can’t bear to use “AFAB” or “DFAB”, use natal female or natal female people (even if you believe that its
unnecessary or that just ‘female’ should be enough, or that it sounds stupid and redundant if you believe one can’t change sex), if you can’t bear to use transgender men nor enby, avoid TIF or “nonbinary girls” and use something else.

If you are discussing individual trans people, find ways to talk without pronoun emphasis rather than jumping to call somebody of MTF spectrum He, and somebody of FTM spectrum She, if for whatever reason(s) you refuse to stick to the “preferred pronoun always no buts no ifs” mindset.

And if you feel the conversation is getting heated, its okay to ask for a pause timeout so you both calm down and can think better your arguments. Supposedly that way you can reduce chances of the other person going into defensive mode, and you can discuss the nuances of your (dis/)agreements with more tact and nuance and less mutual reactive condescencion.

It’s not a guarantee that you’ll be compatible and end up together, but i hope that’s better than nothing. Maybe somebody else here can chime in with better insight if they have been through experiences like yours.

All in all, Wish you best of luck Parnifan!! ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—

But I’m relieved, I don’t know how much more I could take of Brick, Tiffany, Babygirl and co lmao. They’re hilarious but I can only cringe so much in one chapter! (I’m terrified of seeing where the board game thing with Blaire goes ofc lmao.)

Huge fan of how this page looks, and eager to see where the story goes!

    1. I totally understand ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ come the print version I imagine ch11 and ch12 will occupy separate volumes to give them more tonal breathing room from eachother.

With that said you can indeed rest easy re: the gendie gang. None of them will be appearing in this chapter ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ
