More seriously, the suspense is excruciating but it also works so well into seeping through us how horrifying this whole situation is. Depiction of male violence entirely told through the eyes, experiences and feelings of women and girls are so rare, that’s why this chapter really is so vivid. And we only have Shez’s pov here, Merriam’s pov must be just as horrible yet a bit different.
It also really hit so hard and close to our hearts as daughters, like Jaden, that we should be the ones taking over where our parents “lack”, that it’s our duty somehow. It’s such a complex and difficult mindset and emotion…

FYI, what he did is actually worse than choking. Choking is like, getting food stuck in your throat, or if you’re drowning. Hands on neck to stop your air supply is strangling.
Clarifying because I believe the severity of such a heinous act is important to be described correctly. Particularly with the rise of sexualized violence against women and kink-defence court cases.
It’s not “breathplay”, it’s not even choking. It’s strangulation.

God, this page is just so sad 🙁 like… there’s plenty of horror there too, of course, but just… imagining Shez’s disbelief and disappointment and shame. All her hard work, and – apparently – all for nothing. She couldn’t even get one hit in on Chris. Brutal.
It also reminds me of how she spoke to Jaden about being brutalized by the AGPs too – Shez definitely was thinking about her own history at the hands of violent men, and how much she would’ve wanted the comfort of a peer.
And I know you’ve alluded to Rocky and Karissa still having some level of fondness for Chris after all this crap happens, but if they’re witnessing any/all of this I’m really worried about the effect it has on their psyches. Rocky was already physically hurt herself, and ofc she and Karissa are just so young and helpless…
I know that they’re only small children and it’s understandable that they’d have conflicting feelings about the man who used to happily read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to them as they sat in his lap, but I just hope that Shez and Meriam will be able to keep them safely separated and be able to explain to them (when they’re old enough) why he wasn’t a good person.
This poor family has been through enough already without having to deal with some kids suffering from Stockholm syndrome for a father as bad as Chris.

Throughout this chapter, I’ve thought about things I’ve read where men try to downplay just how painful a nut shot actually is because they don’t want women to know how effective a self-defense technique it can be.
Or how one of the other most effective techniques, gouging the eyes, is almost never taught, because… oh no, a precious moid’s eyes? How dare we injure our attacker for wanting to kill us, I guess.
