    YESSSS we get to meet more Yonique staff!! It’s great we finally get to meet Ari tho I’m definitely excited to meet the eventual goth lady the most 😳😳😳 the gendie ladies are all fun but it’s the unashamed lesbian/bi ladies that I wanna meet..

        i believe Charly is referring to the spikey redhead from these teaser doodles I did. She was designed around the same time as Ari (as were the others) so her design may be subject to change before she debuts in-comic.

      I do have a no-shoes-inside friend who, whenever watching me stream, mourns me drawing anyone wearing shoes inside. CH10P24 put Jacob into legit unforgivable territory 😅🤣
       
      I’ve always been in the “it would be presumptuous to take off my shoes in someone else’s home without prompting, because I am a guest. What if they don’t want me to stay a long time?”.
       
      So the way I see this page – now that they’ve gotten passed greetings and have spent some time opening up the Jeopardy Board box, everyone’s settling into a whole-evening stay. Therefore: shoes off.
       
      That and I didn’t wanna draw shoes at all those different angles 💀💀

        Oh so that’s why. Yeah, I’ve never met nobody who had that as a rule. It’s just not common where I leave and I find it quite odd if it’s not a cultural thing.

    Also, ballroom nights?? What do we have to do to manifest the Yonique into reality exactly as in the comic? But ideally somewhere closer to me, haha. Maybe as a franchise? Every major city gets a Yonique and they all have the same vibe and the same schedule but their own staff of course.

    Ok I loved that speedpaint. I feel like I learned a ton just from watching it and I hope you share more but would also love to hear you talk about your drawing process. The blue shadow layer – is that with a blending mode how you do most shading over the flat colors? It seems to work like magic :O unless I’m missing a step.

    (Incredible watching how your art has improved, the confidence/fluidity of your lines now, etc )

      I’m so glad you enjoyed it!! I have done speedpaints for all the remaining pages in this chapter – so you’re in luck!
       
      Unfortunately the blue shadow layer is not as magical as it seems. It actually only acts as a Mask layer that all the shadow colours clip to.
      And it’s blue because it’s easy for me to see.
       
      I have a colour pallete I make (usually at the start of a chapter or scene with a new mood) that I select from. It has flat colours, and corresponding shadow colours and lineart colours.
       
      So I create a Base Mask Layer (for foreground/characters), and then a Shadow Layer that clips to it. I used to do flat colours first but I like doing the shadows first now because it helps me understand values more. Focusing less on a highly accurate light source and more on what will convey shapes of the characters best for readers.
       
      After that an individual layer for each flat colour used in the panel. Examples: Jaden Skin/Riley Freckles, Violet Skin/Riley Hair, Blaire Hair, Red Lips N Nails (Many things share colours to keep the pallete cohesive and more simple).
       
      The flat colours all clip to the Base Layer, meanwhile the shadow Layer gets placed in a folder above them. I take the clipping function off the shadow layer, and instead apply it to the folder. This is so it can now act as a Mask/Base layer, while still not going outside the lines of the first Base Layer.
       
      I copy all the flat colours and paste them into the folder with the Shadow Base Layer, and clip them to it. Lock Opacity and use my pallete to change them to the shadow equivalent.
       

      By the end each panel has a folder that looks something like this. Just with more colours at play XD. (Drawn with my giant fingers on a phone at 3am)

       
      It’s a little bit of a process but I like it because it means I can quickly fix and change up colours if needed.

      Speaking of progress – here’s an LB speedpaint of mine from 2021 just to show the difference. I reccomend watching it at 2x speed because it’s a LOT slower. Before I was using Clip Studio Paint I used Gimp 2.6, and doing all the colouring manually, no mask layers 💀💀
       
      This was peak performance for me 🤣

    i just started reading yesterday, and have read it all through twice. to say im in love with this story would be a major understatement. its brilliant! all the characters are really individual and could be inserted into the real world. going to recommend it to my best mate asap!
     
    embarrassingly, i think my favourite character design is brick- her green hair is cute! i pray we get a peaking moment from her, she seems interesting.
     
    and ohmygod blaire- shes so relatable it hurts. year 10 me was her 😭 i hope we see her change and become more receptive to gendercrit stuff. im surprised she hasnt changed her pronouns to she/they to be more ‘interesting’.
     
    overall im just so excited to see more! not normally a fan of slowburn, but these characters r just too good not to love! <3

    Ari reminds me of that one Jewish aunt/uncle everyone has. Always wearing a Hawaiian print shirt, makes bad jokes (mostly puns), says “Oi vey!” a lot, probably a bachelor/bachelorette. I don’t know why, just vibes.
