Jaden… ?? Poor lass.
I’m glad we’re getting more detail about Jaden’s backstory! I like we can understand both sides for Jaden and her mom. Her mom heard her child talk about wanting to be a doctor from childhood into adulthood only for Jaden to seemingly suddenly not want it anymore after a lifetime of wanting it. It must have been jarring and confusing for her mom! Being a doctor is one of the top successful careers you could have and every parent wants their kid to have a stable financial life.
Though that doesn’t explain the mother’s fondness for Jaden’s little brother’s creative arts, which is more often than not very financially unstable. HMM. Maybe it’s one of those situations where the mother thinks, “My eldest wants to be a doctor, so she’s set and I don’t need to worry about her anymore. I’ll now direct my attentions at the youngest!”
I feel bad for Jaden where her own mom doesn’t understand her career choices but I do have hope her mom will eventually understand. She just needs to realize this isn’t just a phase for Jaden, it’s not burnout, it’s not outside influences convincing her to drop her “dreams” of being a doctor, she just realized she really, really didn’t want to be one. It might take a while for it to sink in, but her mom seems like a genuine person, so it must happen eventually!
Side note: I like how Jaden opening up and talking about her issues is portrayed visually and also within the dialogue. She took off her hat which had been obscuring part of her face for a while now. It’s a nice symbolic gesture of not hiding.
Also, Riley looks terrified this entire page!! She needs to take off her own metaphorical hat!! Is she worried Jaden and Blaire talking one-on-one might bring up an uncomfortable subject relating to what happened on Jaden’s job? She also looks genuinely concerned for Jaden’s pain, too.
oof is right! jaden’s sad little smile talking abt all this is breaking my heart. you rly have done an excellent job making these characters who we in the audience have truly come to care about <3

I’m loving this development! You’re really showing who they are (and thus part of who you are!) in ways that feel familiar and exciting.
More Anderson Family Commentary, but a not-uncommon dynamic in families with a single parent and 2+ children is that the eldest child sort of gets drafted to play the role of a second parent to the younger ones.
Hence why Jaden is expected to be practical and realistic, while Jacob gets more freedom.
