He doesn’t even pretend to care. I think that what strikes me the most with this page – he finds his own kid hurt on the middle of the road in the middle of nowhere and not only doesn’t care, but doesn’t even pretend to. Because she’s not a person. None of the girls are, nor is his wife. They’re just props he’s decorating himself with.
Meriam’s desperation here is not only obvious but also really, really understandable and justified. But it’s still heartbreaking. She knows what he’s like but that’s her baby, so she’s putting herself between him and her baby. Poor her. Poor all of them. I hope they’ll be free soon. Once they’re out, I’m going to wrap them all in soft blankets and bring them tea.
