Oh, Shez…
It’s so sad seeing the contrast between her now versus how she reacted when her other sisters were born. This poor kid lost her childhood so fast and so early.
Shez no π’π’π’πππ you’re already taking on responsibilities nobody should have to take, and setting goals for yourself that border on impossible for a child. It’s not your fault, and you’re not alone. It hurts, but you’re not doing it alone.
This… really puts into perspective the way she talks to Jaden too. Jaden blames herself for everything that goes wrong in her life, and even though Shez has only seen her beat herself up for needing help fending off the AGPgang, it must remind Shez of herself.
Young Shez has one good woman in her corner, and current Jaden has more. But when someone gets stuck taking a lot of responsibility at a young age like they did, it can be really hard to notice that.
(And since Chris’s presence necessitates doing things in secret, that makes it even harder to notice. Meriam is still squirreling money away and making certain preparations Shez can’t necessarily see, but that’s exactly it – Shez doesn’t know the full extent of them.)
I imagine when Shez is comforting Jaden about that night, she’s thinking of what her younger self needed.
You are spot on, Shez was definitely relating to her own experiences π
And now as Jaden is listening to Shez, she’s likely relating it back to her own experiences with childhood.
The goals are polar opposites: Jaden curing her father of an illness to see him live VS Shez becoming strong enough to kill her step father.
But everything else is pretty much the same: Unforgiving time limit, too young to understand how improbable success is, a heavy sense of (misplaced) duty and responsibility, isolation, wanting to help their mothers have an easier life.

And there’s more similarities to come π
